Oscar Piastri takes the win of the sprint race in Qatar
Oscar Piastri takes the victory in the sprint race in Qatar, starring in an unexpected outcome. In the last section of the final lap, his teammate, Lando Norris, gave up the position, thus ensuring the victory of the young Australian driver.
The start was key in this exciting sprint race. Lando Norris defended his first position with a spectacular start, while Oscar Piastri overtook George Russell to place second, consolidating a solid 1-2 for McLaren. On the other hand, Lewis Hamilton shone by gaining two positions, moving up to fifth place, while Max Verstappen had a difficult start, falling to ninth place.
Even though Oscar Piastri took a place from George Russell at the start, the two engaged in an intense battle during the 19 laps of the race. The Mercedes driver put Piastri in trouble on several occasions, to the point that Lando Norris had to intervene to help his teammate. The McLaren drivers worked strategically as a team, with Norris using DRS so that Piastri could defend second position against the Briton. On the last lap, Norris gave up the position to Piastri, allowing him to take the victory as a gesture of gratitude for the support the Australian gave the Briton in the sprint in Brazil.
“ I planned to do it since Brazil. Just what i thought was best “ says Lando Norris.
On the other hand, Nico Hülkenberg managed to sneak into the points zone, adding two points for Haas. With this result, the team distances itself by two points in its fight with Alpine and Racing Bulls, increasing its chances of securing sixth place in the constructors' championship. In contrast, Red Bull faced a difficult day: Max Verstappen barely achieved eighth place, adding only one point for the team, while Sergio Pérez finished in last position, closing a day to be forgotten.
With this 1-2 for McLaren, the British team extends its advantage over Ferrari, its main competitor, establishing a difference of 30 points in the championship.
