According to FIA regulations, teams are required to have, during the season, a driver from their academy drive one of their cars in Free Practice sessions. This is to continue their training and development programme.
During the first session of on-track action on Friday, we will see IndyCar star Pato O'Ward in McLaren. This season, O'Ward took three class victories and also achieved an outstanding third place in the Indianapolis 500. The Mexican driver will complete his third session behind the wheel of a Formula 1, but it will be his first time participating in his home Grand Prix. The team informs through an official statement.
Felipe Drugovich will be in charge of driving Fernando Alonso's car during the first session of the weekend. The Brazilian driver, currently the team's reserve driver, was Formula 2 champion in 2022.
