The race began in difficult weather conditions, with a high probability of rain expected at various times before the start, leaving the track alternating between wet and dry. From the formation lap, incidents quickly began to occur, and the first to be eliminated was Isack Hadjar. The rookie, who had performed strongly throughout the weekend, unfortunately couldn't even make the start. Another early elimination was Carlos Sainz, whose race also ended earlier than expected.
But they weren't the only ones who were knocked out of the race. The list of retirements was long, including names like Jack Doohan, Fernando Alonso, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Liam Lawson. The combination of changing weather conditions and on-track chaos turned the Australian Grand Prix into a true test of survival for the drivers.
A race that was not only chaotic but also full of surprises. Alex Albon, driving his Williams, Lance Stroll driving the Aston Martin, and Nico Hülkenberg driving the Sauber all managed to get into the points, overtaking both Ferrari drivers and Oscar Piastri.
The McLaren driver had been fighting for victory for much of the race, but in the closing laps, he made a mistake that took him off the track, relegating him to the back of the field. Despite this unfortunate incident, he managed to recover to ninth place, scoring just two points in the championship.
One of the biggest surprises of the race was Kimi Antonelli. The Mercedes driver, making his season debut as a rookie, stunned everyone with an impressive fifth place finish, beating several drivers with much more experience in the category.
The young Italian could have even finished fourth, but a five-second penalty relegated him one position. Even so, his performance was outstanding, highlighted by a formidable race pace. On several laps, he even went faster than his teammate, George Russell, demonstrating his undeniable talent and potential.
Meanwhile, Liam Lawson, Red Bull's second driver, had a weekend to forget. From the opening sessions, he seemed uncomfortable with the car, making several mistakes that compromised his performance.
His race was disastrous, with a pace far below that of his teammate, Max Verstappen. To top it all off, he couldn't finish the race due to an accident that put him out of the race, adding a DNF to his difficult season debut.
A race to forget for the Ferrari drivers. After a difficult qualifying the day before and a strategic error during the race, the team lost valuable points in the championship fight.
The poor performance leaves them far behind the season leaders, with McLaren, Mercedes, and Red Bull consolidating their position as the strongest teams in this early stage of the championship. Ferrari will need to analyze what happened and find solutions quickly if it wants to stay in the fight for the top spots.
On the other hand, Lando Norris took victory in the first race of the year with an incredible performance. Although McLarens were known to be the fastest cars and the team to beat this season, the Briton demonstrated his talent with an impeccable performance.
From the first lap, he secured his leading position, fending off attacks from strong drivers like his teammate Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen. He also made smart decisions with his team regarding tires and strategy, which was key to staying ahead.
Throughout the race, he only made a few mistakes, but not even Verstappen's constant pressure in the closing laps could destabilize him. Ultimately, Norris crossed the finish line as a deserved winner, making it clear that he is a mature driver determined to fight for the top spot this season.
Max Verstappen, who appeared to be lost during the opening sessions of the weekend, managed to regain his form in both qualifying and the race, once again demonstrating his ability to fight at the top.
Despite his strong performance, it was clear that Red Bull lost significant pace against McLaren, a worrying aspect for the Austrian team if they want to stay in the championship fight. If Red Bull fails to find solutions soon, they could find themselves relegated to the dominant 2025 team: McLaren.
