These conversations have been taking place since 2024. But during these year, important agreements have been reached between General Motors, Cadillac, their allies and the top category. What would be driving the entry of another team. General Motors' proposal has attracted the attention of Formula 1 and talks are at an advanced stage, regarding the possible entry in 2026.
It would enter with the name GM Cadillac and it is understood that it is the continuation of the Andretti project. This would be the second American team on the grid. Andretti Global has been trying to enter the top category for several years, but it was never effective. With the partnership with General Motors this option looks much more viable.
Another important factor is that although the project is from General Motors and Cadillac, Andretti global was the one who started this idea. Reason why, Cadillac already confirmed that the position of team director would be occupied by Mario Andretti.
“ My first love was formula 1 and now 70 years later, the f1 paddock is still my happy place. To still be involved at this stage of my life, i have to pinch myself to make sure im not dreaming” said Andretti.
GM Cadillac would enter as a customer engine team for the first two seasons. It is understood that their main option would be Ferrari or Honda and they would be running with these engines until 2028. The year in which the manufacturer would begin to supply its own parts.
The acceptance of the entry of another American team to Formula 1 is done in order to expand the popularity of the sport in the country, given that in the United States in recent years the increase in sports fans has been increasing and to have another American team will help continue the growth. Additionally, this team will be based in Silverstone.
Toto Wolff director of Mercedes said "this is a great opportunity for the sport both competitively and in the influence of the sport in more places in the world."
